“Serial killer? You want us to catch a serial killer?” I gaped at Fiona. She couldn’t be serious. For the past two years, Timo and I had run retrieval jobs. We excelled at breaking and entering and getting our hands on things that the IA-5 wanted out of the hands of the bad guys.
“Yes,” Fiona slipped the file across the table. I reached for it but Timo was faster. He flipped open the folder page. A piece of yellow legal paper slipped out. It was the list of names and it was short. We turned to the suspect sheet.
“We call him Xavier. We don’t have an actual name. It’s what the previous agents called him and that’s what we’ll continue to calling him. You’ll be working the case fresh. Despite objections of having the two of you on the case,” at this Fiona shot a pointed look at Hernan. He was still looking glum, slumped in his seat. “I’m sure you will do an outstanding job based on your record.”
Timo flipped through the pages. His eyebrows almost reached his eyebrows as he handled the paper with the short list of names of the people who knew about the case. I hoped Lewis wasn’t on there. I hated working with him.
“Xavier has been targeting women for the past two years. Due to the nature of the kills it’s been classified as need to know. Our role in this is simply in and out. That means the Supernatural Bureau of Investigation doesn’t know of our involvement in this. We are not going to step on any toes.”
“Couldn’t we have a joint task force?” Timo asked.
Fiona shook her head. “The management has insisted on silos on this case. We don’t have access to their data and they don’t have access to ours.”
Timo frowned. “But shouldn’t the objective be catching this guy? Wouldn’t it speed up our process if we knew what has been investigated already?”
“No, it will lead you down wrong paths. The reason you and Agent Valeron have been placed on the case is that you have a unique point of view. We won’t muddy it by showing you others work. We need fresh eyes on this, Agent Garcia.”
“Does that mean we won’t have the bodies to assess?” I interrupted her.
“You won’t have access to the previous bodies but we may reconsider that regarding fresh kills.”
“How often does he kill?” Timo asked.
“He’s murdered twenty-three women from what we know so far.”
“Over what time period? You’ve been trying to catch him for two years, does that mean it’s been one kill a month?” I asked Fiona.
“You can reach your conclusions after going through the data. I won’t give you any insight from previous research.” She had caught on to what I was trying to do. My lips quirked upwards, I couldn’t help my smile.
“We might provide you with data,” she amended her statement. “But we prefer you go through the file and come up with your own assessment. This case is to be your primary priority.
